Google has launched the Google Safety Engineering Centre India (GSEC India) in Hyderabad — its first in the Asia-Pacific region and fourth worldwide. The centre will focus on strengthening cybersecurity, digital safety, and responsible AI development tailored to India’s needs.

Inaugurated by Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy and IT Minister D Sridhar Babu, the launch comes a day after Google introduced its Safety Charter in Delhi. GSEC India will implement the charter’s key goals. The Google Safety Engineering Centre India is crucial in protecting users from scams, securing digital infrastructure, and ensuring the safe use of AI.

The centre will act as a regional hub for privacy engineering, AI safety research, and cybersecurity innovations. Google plans to roll out AI-powered features. These features include scam detection on Android via Gemini Nano and enhanced fraud protection in Google Pay, Gmail, and Search. It will also offer watermarking tools like SynthID to combat misinformation.

It will also support research with institutions like IIT Madras in areas such as post-quantum cryptography. Additionally, it will promote digital literacy in multiple Indian languages. Officials said the facility will boost Telangana’s role as a cybersecurity hub and generate skilled jobs. It will also deepen academic partnerships.

This new centre builds on Google’s long presence in the state since 2004. It also expands ongoing collaborations in agriculture, traffic tech, and digital training. GSEC India will contribute to global safety efforts. Additionally, it will support the development of products and policies across the Asia-Pacific region.
