Government Drops Mandatory Sanchar Saathi Pre-Installation Rule

Sanchar Saathi
Adoption has accelerated rapidly, with 6 lakh new registrations recorded in a single day.

The government has withdrawn the rule requiring smartphone makers to pre-install the Sanchar Saathi app, saying voluntary adoption has grown sharply and users now trust the platform. The rule had originally been introduced to ensure wider access to cybersecurity tools, especially for people less aware of digital risks. Officials stressed that the app is secure, focuses only on user protection, and can be deleted at any time.

Sanchar Saathi enables citizens to report cyber fraud and other malicious activity. So far, 1.4 crore people have downloaded the app, helping flag around 2,000 fraud incidents daily.

Adoption has accelerated rapidly, with 6 lakh new registrations recorded in a single dayβ€”a tenfold jump. With this surge seen as a sign of strong public confidence, the government said pre-installation is no longer needed.

Earlier, Union Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia told the Lok Sabha that the app will be improved based on user feedback. He added that about 1.5 crore fraudulent mobile connections have been disconnected in India thanks to Sanchar Saathi.
