GRSE Board Clears ₹2,896 Crore Greenfield Shipyard at Raichak

GRSE will build a new greenfield shipyard in West Bengal after its board approved a ₹2,896 crore capital outlay for Raichak.

The Navratna defence PSU took the decision at its board meeting on September 21, 2026, and the shipyard is meant to be a greenfield site, built entirely from the ground up rather than expanding an existing unit.

The plan itself is not new. GRSE had first flagged capacity expansion at Raichak back in August, when the estimated cost stood closer to ₹2,500 crore.

The board has now formally approved a higher figure of ₹2,896 crore for the project, once it went through detailed planning.

Once ready, the facility is expected to widen GRSE’s shipbuilding capacity across both naval and commercial work.

Based on earlier disclosures, the yard is being designed to build warships as long as 200 metres and commercial vessels of up to 60,000 tonnes deadweight, a scale the company’s existing yards cannot currently match.

Raichak is one part of a larger regional buildout GRSE announced in August.

Alongside it, the company is putting ₹100 crore into reviving its Timber Pond facility at Shalimar in Howrah, and ₹70 crore into a smaller unit at Damodar in Kidderpore meant for repair work and building electric ferries.

GRSE has also been active on other fronts recently. Earlier this month, it signed an agreement with maritime body Det Norske Veritas to work together on warship design and green shipping technology.

In August, it also picked up a ₹45.02 crore order from the West Bengal Tourism Development Corporation for two electric passenger ferries.

The company’s June quarter earnings, released a few weeks ago, showed profit climbing 44% from a year earlier to ₹173 crore, while revenue rose 38% to ₹1,815 crore.

Taken together, these updates point to a company scaling up both its order book and its physical capacity at the same time.
