The Group of Ministers (GoM) responsible for streamlining the structure of the goods and services tax (GST) will convene on 20 October to discuss ideas for rate rationalisation pertaining to textile, footwear, and food items. The products being examined fall into the 12% tax level.
In its eighth year after the indirect tax regime was introduced, the GoM on GST rate rationalisation, led by Bihar deputy chief minister Samrat Chaudhary, has been entrusted with streamlining the tax structure. Experts predict that rationalisation will reduce the burden of compliance and increase collections.
The GST GoM is probably going to talk about rate rationalisation ideas on roughly a hundred specific items. The GoM will initially look at food items, footwear and textiles, which concern the common man and impact daily life.
The other members of the GoM are Gajendra Singh, the minister of health for Punjab; Krishna Byre Gowda, the minister of revenue for Karnataka; Chandrima Bhattacharya, the minister of Kerala; and Suresh Kumar Khanna, the minister of finance for Uttar Pradesh.
Reorganised on 1 November 2023, the Group of Ministers (GoM) was established. In order for the GST Council to debate the GoM’s recommendations in November, it is expected that they will be made this month.
The Union’s finance minister serves as the council’s 33-member head, and each state designates its finance minister or any other minister to the committee. For the council to act, a three-fourths majority is needed.
