Gujarat Cable Bridge Collapse: PM Modi to Visit Morbi Today

PM Narendra Modi visits Morby today as death toll rises to 135.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Morbi in Gujarat today after a century-old bridge collapsed on Sunday, killing 134 people.

The PM is expected to visit the site of the incident in Morbi and the civil hospital treating the injured. On Monday, PM Modi chaired a high-level meeting at Raj Bhavan in Gandhinagar to review the situation in Morbi. The meeting decided to hold a national mourning ceremony for the victims on November 2.

Morbi’s British-era suspension bridge, which has been closed for refurbishment since March, collapsed on Sunday night – just four days before it reopened to the public. Officials said at least 47 children, several women and the elderly were among the dead.

Nearly 500 people were on the bridge when it collapsed. However, the 150-year-old building can only carry the weight of about 125 people.

Documents show that the bridge was opened to the public five months ago. The Oreva Group, which built the bridge, had not obtained a health certificate from the civic authorities before the bridge was opened.

The company had contracted to close the bridge for at least eight to 12 months for maintenance and repairs. The police said in the FIR that the bridge’s inauguration last week was a “very irresponsible and reckless move”.

Tickets were sold for Rs 12 to 17 to more than 400 people on Sunday, leading to overcrowding on the “suspension bridge” and old metal wires giving way, officials said. The forensic laboratory in Gujarat also found that the bridge collapsed under the weight of a huge crowd, media reports.

According to media reports, some old cables on the Morbi Bridge were not replaced during the seven-month renovation by the Orewa Group.

Inaugurating the bridge last week, Oreva’s managing director Jaysukhbhai Patel said the company had done a “100 per cent renovation for Rs 2 crore”, and it would remain on hold for at least eight to ten years.

So far, nine people have been arrested in this case. These include Orva’s manager, ticket collector, bridge repair contractor and three security guards whose job was to control the crowd.

When the bridge collapsed, people fell to the ground. In the video, several people can be seen clinging to the wreckage of the bridge while some are swimming safely. On Wednesday, Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel announced a statewide mourning for the victims of the bridge collapse.
