The State Bank of India (SBI) is investigating a suspected data exposure after a hacker group called Siriusim claimed to have obtained around 3.8 lakh data entries linked to the countryβs largest public sector lender.
The alleged dataset reportedly includes customer details, loan applications and account-opening documents. SBI has identified 3,897 records containing personal information in the material reviewed so far.
According to reports, the hacker group claims to possess approximately 3.75 lakh records in CSV format and 2,722 PDF documents. The material allegedly includes names, mobile numbers, dates of birth, email addresses, residential addresses and banking-related application records.
However, the reported number of entries does not necessarily represent the same number of individual customers, as multiple records may relate to one person. SBIβs preliminary examination identified 3,897 records containing personally identifiable information, while the authenticity and source of the wider dataset remain under investigation.
SBI reported that it was alerted to a potential cybersecurity incident on October 16 by its threat intelligence partner, the Defence Cyber Agency and CERT-In. In response, the bank initiated its internal security protocols and brought in an independent cybersecurity firm to examine the matter and assess any possible risks.
The bank clarified in its regulatory disclosure that the incident has not caused any significant disruption to its operations or business continuity. It also stated that there has been no material effect on its financial performance. The investigation is expected to establish the authenticity of the records, how the data may have been exposed and the potential risks to customers.
The alleged exposure highlights the growing risks banks face from cyberattacks and unauthorised access to customer information. Personal details can be misused in phishing attempts, identity fraud and scams involving people impersonating bank officials.
Customers should avoid sharing OTPs, PINs or passwords, remain cautious of unexpected calls and messages, and contact SBI through official channels if they notice suspicious activity.
The investigationβs findings will be important in determining the full extent of the incident and any further steps needed to protect affected customers.
