Hikal Bengaluru API Plant Wins Swiss GMP Certification

Hikal Ltd
Hikal’s Bengaluru plant earned a Swiss GMP certificate from Swissmedic

Hikal Bengaluru plant earned a Swiss GMP certificate from Swissmedic, expanding access to European drugmakers & regulated markets.

Hikal said on 30 October that Swissmedic, Switzerland’s drug regulator, has certified its active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) plant at Jigani in Bengaluru.

API is the part of a medicine that does the actual work, so this site makes the building blocks other companies turn into finished drugs.

The certificate confirms the plant follows Good Manufacturing Practice, or GMP.

Think of it as a rulebook covering clean production, careful record-keeping and regular quality checks.

It carries weight in Europe because Switzerland and the European Union recognise each other’s inspection results under a mutual agreement.

For Hikal, that means easier conversations with customers across Europe and other tightly regulated markets, the company said.

This is not the plant’s first outside check. Regulators in Brazil (ANVISA) and Japan (PMDA) have inspected the same site earlier.

Chairman and Managing Director Sameer Hiremath said the Swiss approval backs the quality systems at the plant.

He added that quality and compliance remain the base of long-term customer partnerships.

The news also fits a wider plan. Hikal wants its pharma sales spread across more regions, so that trade disputes or political tensions in one place hurt less.

Pharma is still the bigger part of the business. In FY26, the segment brought in Rs 1,021 crore, down 12.6% from the year before.

The company runs five plants in India, including Taloja and Mahad in Maharashtra, Panoli in Gujarat and Jigani in Bengaluru.

It also has a research and technology centre in Pune. Other changes are under way too.

In late September, Hikal began commercial production of personal care products at its Panoli plant in Gujarat, and shareholders approved Sameer Hiremath as chairman and managing director.

On 1 October, founder Jai Hiremath stepped down as executive chairman and became chairman emeritus, an honorary post, while Anish Swadi took over as CEO of the animal health and specialty ingredients business.
