IDFC First Bank raised $500 million in its first international bond issue, pricing three-year notes due 2029 at a fixed 5.625% coupon.

The notes were issued through the bank’s IFSC Banking Unit at GIFT City and sold to investors outside the US, a common route for international bond sales that don’t need registration with US securities regulators.

BofA Securities acted as the sole placement agent on the deal. This wasn’t a small, quiet placement either.

The issue drew interest from some of the world’s biggest institutional investors, including BlackRock, Capital Group and AllianceBernstein. The timing matters here.

Just days before the bond pricing, on August 13, S&P Global Ratings gave IDFC FIRST Bank its first international credit rating, an investment-grade BBB- with a stable outlook.

That rating likely helped the bank attract the kind of large global investors that ended up anchoring this issue.

Sudhanshu Jain, the bank’s Chief Financial Officer and Head of Corporate Centre, called the transaction a landmark moment for the bank.

He said the strong investor turnout points to growing confidence in IDFC FIRST’s financial position, its expanding customer base and how it manages risk.

The bank has spent the past several years building out its retail deposit base, strengthening its balance sheet and investing in technology and distribution networks.

This bond sale gives it a new funding channel to support that ongoing growth, on top of the deposits and domestic borrowing it already relies on.

Beyond confirming that the money will go toward general funding needs and long-term growth plans, the bank hasn’t detailed exactly how it intends to deploy the proceeds.
