India is ramping up its push for self-reliance in electronics manufacturing, approving six companies under the Electronics Component Manufacturing Scheme (ECMS) with a total proposed investment of Rs 5,532 crore. The move is expected to boost domestic production, reduce import dependence, and strengthen Indiaβs position in the global electronics supply chain.
According to the government, the approved firms β including Kaynes Circuits (a subsidiary of Kaynes Technology), Syrma Strategic Electronics (a Syrma SGS subsidiary), SRF Ltd, and Ascent Circuits β are targeting a combined production value of Rs 44,406 crore. Union I&B Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the initiative could help India save up to Rs 20,000 crore in import costs.
These companies will manufacture key components. This includes Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs), high-density and multi-layer PCBs, copper laminates, camera modules, and capacitor films. Collectively, they are expected to meet 20% of Indiaβs multi-layer PCB demand and 100% of copper laminate requirements. They will also fulfill 15% of camera module needs.
The ECMS, launched with an outlay of Rs 22,805 crore, aims to build a robust domestic component ecosystem. Based on applications received, the government is now eyeing proposed production worth Rs 10.34 lakh crore. This far exceeds its initial target of Rs 4.6 lakh crore.
The scheme has also drawn strong interest from investors. There were 249 total applications submitted. The mobile and IT hardware segment attracted the largest proposed investment. It amounted to Rs 35,813 crore across 16 applicants. Meanwhile, the electro-mechanical segment received the highest number of applications at 87.
Overall, the approved projects are projected to create over 1.41 lakh jobs. This significantly exceeds the governmentβs earlier goal of 91,600. It signals a major boost to Indiaβs electronics manufacturing landscape.
