India, EU Sign High-Performance Computing Cooperation Agreement

India, European Commission sign agreement of intent for cooperation on high-performance computing, quantum technology.

On Monday, India and the European Union signed a high-performance computing collaboration agreement in fields such as biomolecular medicine, Covid therapy, climate change mitigation and natural disaster prediction.

The document of intent for cooperation was signed by senior officials from the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) and the European Commission’s Directorate General for Communication Networks, Content and Technologies (DG CONNECT).

The EU issued a statement here saying that the intention to further cooperate builds on the commitment of both parties to deepen cooperation in quantum and high-performance computing technologies at the EU-India leaders’ meeting in May 2021.

It said the signing of the agreement came against the backdrop of the decision on April 25 this year to form the EU-India Trade and Technology Committee (TTC).

The “Cooperation Intent” aims to use supercomputers in India and Europe to establish high-performance computing (HPC) application cooperation in biomolecular medicine, novel coronavirus treatment, climate change mitigation, natural disaster prediction and quantum computing.
