On 10th June, Foreign Minister S Jaishankar said India is hopeful of finalising a trade deal with the US before the reciprocal tariffs suspension ends on 9th July.
Talks began in February 2025, even before US President Trump’s 26% tariff threat. This threat was announced on 2nd April but later paused for 90 days.
Jaishankar told Le Figaro that Indo-US ties have strengthened over the last 25 years. These ties extend across various sectors, including economy, technology, defence, and education.
He said that Prime Minister Modi and President Trump had agreed in February to expand mutual market access.
On Trump’s foreign policy, he noted the US president is advancing QUAD and prioritising American interests. This is a stance Jaishankar said he would mirror.
He also underlined India’s strong ties with France, built on trust and cooperation in defence, nuclear, civil, and strategic sectors.
In a multipolar world, India and France value strategic autonomy. They are seeking to partner in areas such as AI, space, defence, and climate.
