India’s strategic foothold in Iran just got a major boost. The US has granted New Delhi a six-month exemption from sanctions for its operations at the Chabahar Port, ensuring uninterrupted access to one of India’s most critical trade and connectivity hubs.
The Ministry of External Affairs confirmed the waiver on 30th October. It says the waiver allows India to continue managing and developing the Shahid Behesti Terminal through India Ports Global Limited (IPGL). The sanctions relief, which had expired earlier this week, gives India breathing space to strengthen its regional logistics network.
Chabahar holds immense strategic importance for India, serving as a vital gateway to Afghanistan and Central Asia. It bypasses Pakistan. The port is a key part of the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC), connecting India, Iran, Russia, and other Central Asian countries. This reduces transit time and costs.
The renewal follows a 2024 agreement between India and Iran, which reaffirmed New Delhi’s long-term commitment to developing the port.
While US sanctions on Iran’s financial and energy sectors have created challenges, Chabahar has consistently received exemptions. This is due to its humanitarian and strategic relevance. The latest waiver allows India to maintain its delicate diplomatic balance. This sustains close ties with both Washington and Tehran while advancing its regional trade ambitions.
