India, Japan Strengthen Defence Ties to Tackle Cross-Border Threats

Both nations emphasised the need for joint efforts to tackle cross-border threats.

India and Japan held wide-ranging defence talks in New Delhi on 5th May, led by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and his Japanese counterpart Gen Nakatani.

The discussions focused on countering terrorism, boosting bilateral defence cooperation, and responding to China’s growing military presence in the Indo-Pacific.

Gen Nakatani condemned the Pahalgam terror attack and expressed solidarity with India, offering full support in the fight against terrorism.

Both nations emphasised the need for joint efforts to tackle cross-border threats and condemned terrorism in all forms.

They also explored ways to deepen defence-industrial collaboration and exchanged views on the regional and global security landscape.

Talks included progress on a reciprocal supply and services agreement to allow each other’s militaries to use bases for repairs and resupply, enhancing interoperability.

This was the second meeting between the two ministers in six months, following their interaction at the ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting-Plus in Lao PDR.

The two sides also reviewed developments in the East and South China Seas amid rising tensions due to Beijing’s assertive actions.
