India Needs $220 Billion for 500 GW Clean Energy Target

India needs about $220 billion in clean energy investment by 2030 to hit its 500 GW target

India needs about $220 billion in clean energy investment by 2030 to hit its 500 GW target, a senior federal ministry official said on 28 October.

Santosh Kumar Sarangi, Secretary at the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, gave the figure on Wednesday.

He said the money is needed between 2027 and 2030 for solar and wind farms, batteries, power lines and green hydrogen.

India has about 308 GW of non-fossil capacity today and wants 500 GW by 2030.

GW, or gigawatt, measures power plant capacity. Solar takes the biggest slice, at $70 billion to $75 billion.

Transmission needs $40 billion to $45 billion, wind $25 billion to $30 billion, green hydrogen $20 billion to $25 billion and manufacturing $15 billion to $20 billion.

India drew in about $64 billion between July 2024 and June 2026, including $6.2 billion from foreign investors. The government added $6 billion.

About 40 GW of clean energy projects still have no customer for their power. That leaves money tied up without steady income.

The Centre is asking state governments to take more clean power and add battery storage.

A farm pilot is part of the plan. Green ammonia is made with hydrogen produced using renewable electricity, not natural gas.

India is testing it on 10,000 acres across 37 districts in six states, covering ten crops, this rabi season.

Instead of being turned into urea first, the ammonia goes straight into the soil. Sarangi said that could cut costs to almost a third, with less lost to evaporation.

He added that the large government subsidy on urea has to be counted in any comparison.

Overseas buyers drive demand for now, with Indian companies signing green hydrogen supply deals of over 5.5 lakh tonnes a year, the ministry said.

At home, green ammonia costs more to make than grey ammonia, which uses natural gas.

India will meet investors at a clean energy summit in New Delhi next week, including pension funds from Canada.
