India and Pakistan on 1st January exchanged their lists of nuclear installations, continuing a long-standing confidence-building practice despite strained bilateral ties. The exchange was carried out under a bilateral agreement that bars both sides from attacking each other’s nuclear facilities.
The Ministry of External Affairs said the lists were shared simultaneously through diplomatic channels in New Delhi and Islamabad. The exchange took place even as relations between the two countries remain frozen following last May’s military hostilities.
The agreement prohibiting attacks on nuclear installations was signed on 31st December 1988. It entered into force on 27th January 1991. Under the pact, both countries are required to share details of their nuclear facilities on 1st January every year.
This marks the 35th consecutive exchange of such lists. The first exchange took place on 1st January 1992, the MEA said.
