India and Romania are exploring a new partnership that could open the door for around 30,000 skilled Indian professionals each year. This plan is part of broader talks to strengthen mobility, trade, and social security cooperation between the two nations.

Minister of State for Commerce & Industry Jitin Prasada, who is in Bucharest for the 19th meeting of the Joint Committee for Economic Cooperation (JCEC), met Romanian officials. They discussed skill-based migration and economic collaboration. Romania, which hires about 1 lakh non-EU workers annually, has expressed interest in creating a dedicated pathway for Indian professionals. This aims to meet its labour market needs.

Both countries also discussed a possible Social Security Agreement to ensure benefits for Indian workers in Romania. They agreed to fast-track cooperation on recruitment, language training, and the mutual recognition of qualifications.

Later, Prasada met Romania’s Foreign Minister Oana-Silvia Țoiu to discuss trade and investment. They also talked about the ongoing India-EU Free Trade Agreement (FTA) negotiations, which both sides aim to conclude this year.

Bilateral trade between India and Romania stood at nearly $3 billion in FY 2023-24, with India’s exports crossing $1 billion. The two nations agreed to deepen cooperation in petroleum, engineering, pharmaceuticals, and ceramics to boost supply-chain resilience and market access.
