As modern warfare rapidly evolves, the Indian Army is reshaping its combat strategy. It is doing so with the creation of ‘Bhairav’, a new Special Force built around advanced drone warfare.

The Army has created a pool of over one lakh drone-trained operatives. They are all capable of using drones in real combat to strike enemy bases and formations deep inside hostile territory.

Around 15 Bhairav battalions have already been raised and deployed across both borders. There are plans to expand the force to nearly 25 battalions in the near future.

Designed to bridge the gap between Para Special Forces and regular infantry units, Bhairav battalions are meant for high-speed, offensive missions. They are also designed for special operations at tactical and operational depth.

According to Army officials, the force is part of a broader restructuring effort. This is to address the hybrid nature of modern conflicts, where technology, speed, and precision play a decisive role.

Some Bhairav units follow a “Sons of the Soil” concept. This includes the desert battalion raised from troops in Rajasthan, leveraging local knowledge of terrain, language, and weather conditions.

The battalions have already completed operational validation during Exercise Akhand Prahar, showcasing their readiness before senior Army leadership.

Bhairav is emerging as a “swift, capable and decisive” force within the Indian Army. It complements other modernisation initiatives such as the newly raised Rudra Brigades.

The Bhairav battalions are set to make their public debut at the Indian Army’s Army Day Parade in Jaipur on 15th January.
