India’s auto sector has drawn Rs 45,477 crore in PLI scheme investment as of June 30, creating over 67,000 jobs, the government said.

Union Heavy Industries and Steel Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy shared these numbers on September 2, speaking at the 66th annual session of the Automotive Component Manufacturers Association of India in Delhi.

The auto PLI scheme itself carries an outlay of Rs 25,038 crore, and the investment figures reflect what approved applicants have reported to date.

Kumaraswamy said the next stage needs to be about scale, deeper localisation and faster innovation, so India can become a genuinely competitive hub for advanced and green mobility technology rather than just a manufacturing base.

Electric vehicles are getting a big push too. The PM E-DRIVE scheme now carries an outlay of Rs 11,900 crore, up by Rs 1,000 crore, and is targeting support for 45.79 lakh electric two-wheelers.

So far, more than 25.66 lakh two-wheelers, 2.75 lakh three-wheelers and 53 electric trucks have already been supported under it. Buses and charging infrastructure are part of the plan as well.

The government has set aside Rs 4,391 crore for 14,028 electric buses, with 13,800 already allocated, and a separate Rs 3,435 crore payment security mechanism is backing the rollout of over 38,000 e-buses.

For charging, Rs 2,000 crore has been earmarked, with proposals worth Rs 729 crore covering 7,254 chargers approved so far.

On top of this, an Rs 18,100 crore battery storage scheme is aiming for 50 GW of domestic battery manufacturing capacity.

ACMA president Vikrampati Singhania noted that the auto component industry crossed Rs 7.6 lakh crore in turnover in 2026, growing 12.7%, with exports touching $24 billion.

He called it a generational opportunity for the industry to build technology for both India and the world.
