India is likely to see its peak power demand for 2025 in September. This is due to the early arrival of the monsoon and pre-monsoon rains. These factors helped keep temperatures lower during the summer, according to government sources.

Officials explained that the rains have prevented power demand from peaking so far. However, it is too early to rule out the possibility of reaching the projected peak demand of 277 GW this year. Currently, the highest power demand has remained in the range of 240–245 GW.

The situation is similar to 2023, when peak power demand was also recorded in September. To better forecast power needs and ensure grid stability, the government has requested the wind and solar energy sectors to install local weather stations at their sites.

At the India Energy Storage Week 2025 in New Delhi, Power Minister Manohar Lal Khattar said India’s renewable energy share is expected to surpass 50% of the total energy mix this year. This is five years ahead of its commitment under the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) to the UNFCCC.
