India’s Wholesale Inflation Surges to 11.39% in September - EP
The rise in wholesale inflation could squeeze company profit margins if businesses cannot pass higher costs.

India’s wholesale price inflation (WPI) climbed to 11.39% in September 2026, up from 9.92% in August, as higher fuel, food and manufactured goods prices increased cost pressures across the economy.

The data, released by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry on October 14, showed a broader rise in wholesale prices, raising concerns about the impact on businesses, consumers and the Reserve Bank of India’s monetary policy.

1. Fuel and Energy Prices Lead the Increase

Fuel and power inflation rose to 25.85% in September from 22.93% in August. The sharpest pressure came from crude petroleum and natural gas, where inflation surged to 57.32%, compared with 34.41% a month earlier.

Mineral oil inflation also increased to 40.02%, while coal and lignite inflation rose to 9.31% from 1.57%. These increases reflect the impact of elevated energy costs and supply disruptions linked to geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.

2. Food Inflation Adds to Price Pressures

Wholesale food inflation, measured by the WPI Food Index, increased to 8.66% in September from 7.05% in August. Inflation in primary food articles climbed to 8.14%, compared with 5.67% in the previous month.

3. Manufacturing Costs Continue to Climb

Inflation in manufactured products rose to 9.76% from 8.37% in August. Basic metals inflation jumped to 16.96%, while chemicals and chemical products inflation reached 16.74%. Prices also increased across textiles, rubber and plastic products, and electrical equipment.

What It Means for the Economy

The rise in wholesale inflation could squeeze company profit margins if businesses cannot pass higher costs on to customers. It may also complicate monetary policy decisions as retail inflation rises.

The direction of crude oil prices, food supplies and inflation in the coming months will be important indicators of whether these pressures continue.
