Informal BRICS Leaders’ Meeting Held On The Margins Of G20 Summit

An annual Informal Meeting between the Leaders of BRICS nations was held on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Buenos Aires. The meeting was attended by President Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa, President Michel Temer of Brazil, President Vladimir Putin of Russia, President Xi Jinping of China and Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi.

A joint statement was released by the BRICS leaders, which conveyed that views on various matters such as international politics, security and global economic-financial issues, as well as challenges facing sustainable development, were discussed among the leaders. Also, the commitment towards world peace and stability, playing a central role in the United Nations, abiding the UN Charter, promotions of democracy, showing respect for international law were strengthened.

BRICS nations condemned all forms & manifestations of terrorism and call for the greater comprehensive approach in combating terrorism among all nations was made. BRICS leaders also supported the idea of working towards improvement of the WTO, which includes the better preservation of core value and fundamental principles of the WTO greater reflection of interests of all WTO members, particularly developing countries.

The commitment towards the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Development Goals were also reinforced by the BRICS Leaders. The 2030 agenda states the equitable, inclusive, open, all-around innovation-driven and sustainable development, in its three dimensions – economic, social and environmental – in a balanced and integrated manner, towards the ultimate goal of eradicating poverty by 2030.

However, the predominant topic in the entire meeting was the initiative towards climate change, specifically the Paris Agreement. The full implementation of the Paris Agreement adopted under the principles of the UNFCCC including the principles of common but differentiated responsibilities and respective capabilities was reaffirmed. The Paris Agreement came under scrutiny by US President Donald Trump and resulted in the US leaving the agreement.

The 11th BRICS Summit will be hosted by Brazil in 2019.
