IRS Officer Nitin Gupta Appointed New CBDT Chairman

According to a recent government order, IRS officer Nitin Gupta was named the new CBDT chairman. Gupta, a former Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer with a group of Income Tax Cadre in 1986, is currently a board member (Investigation) and plans to retire next September.

“The Cabinet Appointments Committee has approved the appointment of Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) member Shri Nitin Gupta, IRS (IT:86) as Chair of the Central Board of Direct Taxes,” said the order issued on June 25.
In 1986, board member and IRS officer Sangeeta Singh took over as head of the CBDT following JB Mohapatra’s retirement on April 30.

The CBDT is headed by a chairman and can have six members as special secretaries. It is the administrative body of the Income Tax Department.

The board currently has five members, with IRS officer Anuja Sarangi in 1985 being the most senior. The other members are Pragya Sahay Saksena and Subashree Anantkrishnan from the IRS in 1987.
