Jain Irrigation to Supply 19,000 Tonnes of Biochar Credits

Jain Irrigation signed a deal to supply up to 19,000 tonnes of biochar carbon credits to UK-based Supercritical Tech

Jain Irrigation signed a deal to supply up to 19,000 tonnes of biochar carbon credits to UK-based Supercritical Tech by 2027.

The company told exchanges that the credits will come from its plant in Jalgaon, Maharashtra, and cover production in 2026 and 2027.

A carbon credit is a certificate for carbon dioxide removed from the air. Biochar is a charcoal-like material.

The plant makes it by heating farm waste and food-processing leftovers, a process called gasification.

Once mixed into soil, biochar can hold carbon for centuries. Little goes to waste.

The gas the process produces runs Jain Irrigation’s factories in place of fossil fuels, while the biochar goes to the company’s own farm operations and to local farmers to improve soil.

The firm says this approach spared it the cost of building new projects.

The buyer, Supercritical Tech Ltd, is a London-based carbon removal marketplace founded in 2021.

It serves more than 200 corporate buyers and tracks over 600 suppliers.

As of 31 December 2025, it held net assets of about GBP 2.1 million and cash of about GBP 4.4 million.

Jain Irrigation said the deal is not a related-party transaction.

Neither its promoters nor their group companies hold any stake in Supercritical, the company owns no shares in the buyer, and no board seat is planned for a Supercritical nominee.

The firm filed the agreement as an international strategic tie-up under SEBI disclosure rules. Quality checks are under way.

Puro.earth, a carbon credit certification platform, is verifying the project, and BeZero Carbon is working on an independent rating.

Buyers are booking early. According to a Supercritical report, 81% of the 2026 biochar quota was taken by July, three months sooner than last year.

In June, Jain Irrigation said it had commissioned a biochar facility with a capacity of 20,000 tonnes a year.

The company will discuss its second-quarter results on an investor call on 4 November at 4:30 pm. CEO Anil Jain and CFO Bipeen Valame will take part.
