Jindal Stainless has signed a technical assistance agreement with Japan’s JFE Steel to strengthen its ferritic stainless steel manufacturing.

The deal was announced on September 7 and focuses on lifting product quality, refining manufacturing practices and improving overall process efficiency.

Ferritic stainless steel is known for holding up well against corrosion, lasting longer than many alternatives, and costing less over its lifetime compared to other steel grades.

That combination makes it popular in industries like automotive manufacturing, railways and infrastructure, sectors where demand for this material has been climbing steadily.

Under the agreement, JFE Steel will bring its decades of experience in ferritic stainless steel production to support Jindal Stainless’ existing operations.

Managing director Abhyuday Jindal said the partnership is about strengthening the company’s people, processes and practices to create more value for customers, adding that stainless steel is increasingly becoming the material of choice across industries that need a balance of durability, corrosion resistance and cost efficiency.

This isn’t happening in isolation. Jindal Stainless has been investing heavily in its downstream capabilities over the past year.

The company is currently putting in β‚Ή900 crore across its Hisar and Kharagpur units to raise cold rolling capacity to 2.67 million tonnes per annum by FY28.

Separately, in August, it was scouting for a site in Maharashtra to set up a much larger facility, a proposed β‚Ή40,000 crore plant with 4 million tonnes of annual capacity.

On the operational side, the company also worked through a temporary setback earlier this year when gas shortages linked to conflict in West Asia affected output at its Odisha plant.

Jindal Stainless has since shifted that facility to piped natural gas, which has helped normalise production there.

As a company, Jindal Stainless posted a turnover of β‚Ή42,955 crore for FY26 and currently runs 16 manufacturing and processing facilities spread across India, Spain and Indonesia, with a combined annual melt capacity of 4.2 million tonnes.
