Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai 1st Woman to Head Press Council of India

On Friday, Retired Supreme Court Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai became the first female chairperson of the Press Council of India (PCI), with the government officially announcing her appointment.

The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has announced a gazette notification regarding this issue.
A committee comprising Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and PCI member Prakash Dubey recently approved Judge Desai, 72, as PCI chief.

Before serving on the Supreme Court from September 13, 2011, to October 29, 2014, she was a judge of the Bombay High Court.

Judge Desai, 72, recently headed the Jammu and Kashmir Delimitation Commission, which aims to redefine assembly constituencies in the Union Territory.

The PCI chair has been vacant since retired judge Chandramauli Kumar Prasad completed his term last November and stepped down.
