KKR to Acquire Minority Stake in BookMyShow

BookMyShow has grown into a broader entertainment business with a presence across more than 700 towns.

Global investment firm KKR has signed definitive agreements to acquire a minority stake in BookMyShow, as the Indian entertainment and ticketing platform looks to accelerate the expansion of its live entertainment business.

The financial details of the transaction have not been officially disclosed. KKR is expected to acquire around 6% of the company for $40 million to $50 million.

The investment will support BookMyShow’s next phase of growth as it expands beyond its traditional movie-ticketing business. The company has increasingly focused on live concerts, events and experiences, with its BookMyShow Live division handling activities across talent and intellectual property acquisition, production, promotion, partnerships and audience development.

Founded in 2007 as a consumer-facing ticketing platform, BookMyShow has grown into a broader entertainment business with a presence across more than 700 towns and cities in India. Its platform covers movies, live entertainment and other experiences, giving the company a large consumer base through which it can expand its live-events business.

The investment comes as India’s live entertainment market continues to expand, supported by rising discretionary spending and growing demand for international artists and large-scale productions. BookMyShow Live has been involved in bringing major global acts and events to Indian audiences, including concerts featuring artists such as Coldplay, Ed Sheeran and Travis Scott.

For KKR, the investment provides exposure to India’s growing out-of-home entertainment and live experiences market. The private equity firm said BookMyShow’s consumer reach, technology capabilities and entertainment expertise position it to benefit from the country’s young population and increasing demand for premium entertainment experiences.

The transaction also comes as competition in India’s online ticketing market is increasing. Flipkart is preparing to enter the ticketing space, while Eternal’s District platform is also expanding its entertainment offering.

This could increase pressure on BookMyShow to retain its customer base while continuing to secure major events and exclusive entertainment partnerships.

BookMyShow’s evolution from a movie-ticketing platform into a full-stack entertainment company is therefore central to the latest investment. KKR’s capital and global network could help the company scale its live-events operations, strengthen partnerships and bring more international and domestic productions to Indian audiences.

The transaction remains subject to regulatory approvals. If completed, the investment would mark another important step in BookMyShow’s shift towards live entertainment and underline the growing investor interest in India’s rapidly developing concert and events economy.
