The Madhya Pradesh government has announced plans to ban liquor sales at 17 religious sites to address social and economic challenges linked to its consumption.
Chief Minister Mohan Yadav emphasised the importance of protecting the youth from liquor’s adverse effects, calling them the country’s future.
Officials have not disclosed the specific locations or timeline for the implementation of the ban. The cabinet will discuss the matter in Maheshwar on Friday.
Likely sites for the ban include Ujjain, Orchha, Salkanpur, Chitrakoot, Omkareshwar, Maihar, Amarkantak, and Maheshwar, as per reports.
Madhya Pradesh has debated liquor prohibition for decades, with previous bans imposed at sites like Amarkantak and Maheshwar under former Chief Ministers Uma Bharti and Shivraj Singh Chouhan.
Last year, CM Yadav pledged to develop places associated with Lord Ram and Lord Krishna as pilgrimage sites.
