The Madras HC (High Court) has sought a response from the Centre on a petition. The petition demands that petrol and diesel bills clearly show the tax breakup charged to consumers. The PIL argues that fuel outlets should disclose the tax component on both bills and price boards. This ensures transparency for buyers.
Filed by advocate B Ramkumar Adityan, the plea claims that revealing tax details forms part of a consumer’s right to information under the Consumer Protection Act, 2019. The court directed the petitioner to include Central and State tax authorities as additional respondents. This is alongside the Union Petroleum Ministry and the Tamil Nadu Finance Department.
Adityan noted that fuel prices differ across states due to varying tax structures. Yet, bills only show the total cost per litre, leaving consumers unaware of how much they pay in taxes.
He said his earlier representations to the ministry had gone unanswered. This led him to take the matter to court, where he called the lack of transparency an “unfair trade practice.”
