Maharashtra has taken a major leap in digital policing with Microsoft rolling out its AI-powered cybercrime platform. This rollout spans across all 1,100 police stations in the state. Announced during CEO Satya Nadella’s India visit, the move marks one of the country’s biggest deployments of AI in law enforcement.

The system, called MahaCrimeOS AI, was built jointly with the Maharashtra Government and its MARVEL initiative. This initiative aims to integrate AI copilots into key governance processes. The platform helps frontline officers create cases faster, scan data in multiple languages, and automate routine paperwork. Furthermore, it provides quick legal guidance designed to cut delays and speed up investigations.

India reported over 3.6 million cybercrime incidents in 2024. Maharashtra was among the worst hit. The state sees the new AI rollout as essential to tackling rising digital fraud. This includes addressing investment scams, identity theft, and extortion.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said the partnership with Microsoft reflects a shift towards responsible and citizen-focused AI in public services. Built on Azure OpenAI Service and Microsoft Foundry, MahaCrimeOS AI includes legal-reference tools and open-source intelligence features. These features help officers link cases, track suspects, and analyse digital evidence quickly.

During the pilot in Nagpur, officers reported faster access to financial data. They experienced quicker notices to banks and telecom operators, and greater confidence in handling complex digital crime cases. With the statewide rollout now approved, every police station in Maharashtra will soon follow a unified, AI-enabled process for investigating cybercrimes.

Officials say this model could serve as a template for other Indian states seeking to upgrade their digital safety infrastructure. They aim to combat cybercrime with modern, scalable AI tools.
