As India moves towards a more digital-first identity ecosystem, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has rolled out a new Aadhaar mobile app that aims to put greater control directly in users’ hands. The app, to be launched shortly by Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, seeks to simplify updates, verification, and data sharing.
One key feature is selective data sharing. Users no longer need to share a full physical or digital copy of their Aadhaar card for verification at places like hotels. Instead, the app allows limited informationβsuch as name and ageβto be shared. This reduces the risk of misuse and addresses long-standing privacy concerns.
The app also supports offline Aadhaar verification, allowing users to confirm their identity even without an internet connection. This makes Aadhaar services more accessible in areas with poor or unstable connectivity.
Another major upgrade is the ability to update the mobile number linked to Aadhaar directly through the app. This eliminates the need to visit an Aadhaar enrolment centre. Moreover, address updates can also be completed digitally. This further reduces the need for physical visits.
The new Aadhaar app also introduces a family management feature. A single mobile device can manage up to five Aadhaar profiles. Consequently, it is easier for families to handle updates for children and elderly members from one phone.
In addition, UIDAI is in early discussions with device makers such as Samsung, Google, and Apple. They are exploring embedding the Aadhaar app directly into smartphones. While still at a preliminary stage, this could have wider implications for Android and iOS devices globally. The move follows recent debates around mandatory pre-installed government apps and user privacy.
Overall, the new Aadhaar app aims to improve convenience, strengthen data privacy, and reduce reliance on physical Aadhaar cards and enrolment centres. This will be done by shifting key services to a secure digital platform.
