Apple Begins Manufacturing iPhone 11 in Chennai

Chennai’s Foxconn plant is a leading supplier for Apple and has planned to invest up to $1 billion in the expansion of its India factory where it assembles iPhone models, as revealed earlier this month. The second-largest iPhone assembler, Pegatron was also reported to make some investment in the country to set up a local subsidiary in the near future.
The Government’s Aatamnirbhar India Initiative has seen a major win, where Apple has begun manufacturing the iPhone 11, one of its flagship devices, at Foxconn. This accounts for a significant boost being the first time Apple has manufactured a top-of-the-line model in India.
“Significant boost to Make in India! Apple has started manufacturing iPhone 11 in India, bringing a top-of-the-line model for the first time in the country”, Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal announced the news on Twitter on Friday.
2017 saw a start in domestic manufacturing of the Apple iPhone SE 2016 in the Bangalore plant, followed by the Cupertino-based tech giant starting to assemble the iPhone XR in India in 2019.
Apple also has plans to make the iPhone SE 2020 in India in its Wistron plant near Bangalore.
