NGT Orders Volkswagen To Submit Penalty Within 24 Hours

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has strictly ordered the German automaker Volkswagen to deposit Rs 100 crores in the penalty against the order dated November 16, 2018, within 24 hours.

The bench headed by NGT chairperson Adarsh Kumar Goel slammed the German car maker for failing to comply with the tribunal’s order and asked them to give an undertaking that the company will submit the amount by 5 P.M. on Friday.

Justice S P Wangdi, who also presided at the bench said, “Why have you not complied with our order when there is no stay. We will not give you any further time.” The bench also asked Volkswagen to submit an affidavit of compliance after deposit.

The matter revolves around the November 16, 2018 order in which the tribunal ruled that the cheat device used by Volkswagen in its diesel cars in India led to an inference of environmental damage and order the carmaker to deposit an interim amount of Rs 100 crore with the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB).
