NHAI invited bids to widen a 42-km Nagpur stretch of NH-53 from 4 to 6 lanes under a project estimated at Rs 2,553.84 crore.
NHAI stands for the National Highways Authority of India, the government body that builds and manages the country’s national highways.
It published the tender notice on 9 October. A tender is a public invitation for companies to compete for a job.
Firms have until 11 am on 26 November to send in their bids, and NHAI is likely to open them at 11:30 am the next day.
The work covers 42 km of NH-53 in Maharashtra, between kilometre markers 499.800 and 541.800. The gap between those two markers is exactly 42 km.
This is the Nagpur-Wainganga section, part of the Nagpur-Bhandara route. It has four lanes today, and the plan makes it six.
More lanes mean more room for cars, buses and trucks. The extra capacity will serve both passenger and commercial vehicles on the Nagpur-Wainganga route, and the plan aims to cut traffic bottlenecks.
The estimated cost includes GST. NHAI chose the Build-Operate-Transfer toll model for this project.
In simple terms, a private company builds the wider road, runs it and collects tolls for an agreed period, then hands it back.
The project falls under NHAI’s National Highways (Original Works) programme. Nothing is final yet. The project is still in the bidding stage.
Once bids close, NHAI will evaluate the proposals and pick a private developer. The reports give no start date for construction. Highways in Maharashtra have been on the government’s radar for months.
According to PIB, as reported by the sources, Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari reviewed several proposed road projects in the state in May 2026, including six-laning work linked to Nagpur.
The review aimed to speed up planning and construction. The date to watch is 26 November, when the bidding window closes.
