Republican leader Nikki Haley has urged the US to prioritise fixing strained ties with India, calling it a “prized free and democratic partner” rather than treating it like an adversary.
In an opinion piece published on 20th August in Newsweek, the Indian-American leader criticised President Trump’s decision to raise tariffs on Indian goods to 50%, warning that such moves risk undoing 25 years of progress in US-India relations.
Haley said closer ties with New Delhi are vital for America’s goals of countering China, shifting supply chains, and boosting security in Asia. She highlighted India’s capacity in manufacturing, growing defence partnerships with the US, and its strategic location as reasons why Washington must value the collaboration.
She warned that letting relations deteriorate would be a “strategic disaster” and stressed that strengthening ties with India should be one of America’s top foreign policy priorities.
