Ontario to Remove US Alcohol from Stores in Tariff Dispute

Quebec will follow suit and remove US alcohol from its provincial liquor stores starting Tuesday.

Canada’s two largest provinces plan to pull American products from government-run liquor stores in response to President Trump’s 25% tariffs on Canadian imports.

Ontario will remove American alcohol products from government-run stores starting Tuesday when US tariffs on Canadian imports take effect.

The Liquor Control Board of Ontario (LCBO), the province’s sole alcohol wholesaler, will also remove US products from its catalogue to prevent other retailers and restaurants from restocking them.

Quebec will follow suit and remove US alcohol from its provincial liquor stores starting Tuesday.

British Columbia, Nova Scotia, and Manitoba also pledged to remove American alcohol brands from their shelves in retaliation.

Chris Swonger, CEO of the Distilled Spirits Council of the United States, criticized the actions, calling them counterproductive and damaging to Canadian revenues and consumers.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced retaliatory tariffs on C$155 billion worth of American goods, with provincial leaders also preparing non-tariff responses.
