OpenAI is pulling the plug on one of its most talked-about AI products. The firm plans to discontinue Sora, its AI video generator, just months after launching a standalone app. It is doing this as it looks to simplify its growing product lineup.
At the same time, its partnership with Walt Disney Co. is also being wound down. The deal had allowed Sora to use iconic characters like Mickey Mouse and Cinderella. Furthermore, Disney is set to take a $1 billion stake through stock warrants.
Sora initially gained traction after its September launch, even topping the App Store charts, but demand faded over time. The tool required significant computing power. Also, it raised concerns about misuse, including the generation of realistic videos that could spread misinformation.
As part of the shift, OpenAI will shut down both the standalone Sora app and its developer API.
CEO Sam Altman said the company is now focusing on AI agents and a new model called βSpud.β At the same time, the Sora team will continue working on broader research related to simulations and robotics.
The move also comes with internal changes, including restructuring safety and security teams. OpenAI is doubling down on core AI development and long-term infrastructure.
