OpenAI has landed a $200 million contract with the US Defence Department for a pilot program. This program explores the use of artificial intelligence across military operations and administration. This marks a significant milestone for OpenAI for Government, the companyโs newly formed division dedicated to working with federal agencies.
Disclosed by the Defence Department on Monday, the one-year project aims to explore how AI can assist with a variety of tasks. These tasks include improving access to healthcare for military personnel and boosting cybersecurity. OpenAI said this is its first major effort under the OpenAI for Government banner.
The new division brings together all of OpenAIโs federal collaborations, including ChatGPT Gov โ a specialised version of its chatbot for government use. Additionally, it includes partnerships with NASA, the National Institutes of Health, the Air Force Research Laboratory, and the Treasury Department.
OpenAI has also previously announced a partnership with Anduril Industries to develop AI systems for anti-drone defence. This partnership signals a deeper push into national security. The company has made moves to strengthen its role in public-sector AI by hiring a former Pentagon official to head national security policy. Moreover, they added the ex-chief of the NSA to its board.
OpenAI has stated that its government-facing efforts will be guided by a commitment to democratic values. This commitment remains even as its technology expands into sensitive and strategic domains.
