OpenAI has agreed to acquire Windsurf, an AI-assisted coding tool formerly known as Codeium, for around $3 billion.
The deal, which hasn’t closed yet, would be OpenAI’s largest acquisition. The move aims to strengthen OpenAI’s position in the competitive AI coding assistant market.
Windsurf, also known as Exafunction Inc., was recently valued at $1.25 billion and had been in talks to raise funding at a $3 billion valuation.
Rivals like Anthropic and GitHub offer similar AI coding tools, along with newer startups like Anysphere. OpenAI was recently valued at $300 billion after a $40 billion SoftBank-led financing round and has decided against becoming a conventional for-profit firm.
