OpenAI has announced that its next-generation AI model, Astra, has solved or made significant progress on 10 long-standing problems in mathematics and theoretical computer science. 

The breakthrough is being viewed as an important step for artificial intelligence, demonstrating that advanced AI systems are beginning to contribute to complex scientific research rather than just generating text or code.

According to OpenAI, Astra produced new results across fields including cryptography, coding theory, quantum complexity, operator algebras and combinatorics. Human researchers then converted the AI’s findings into formal research papers, while each mathematical proof was independently verified using the Lean proof assistant, ensuring the results could be checked with mathematical precision.

Unlike earlier AI models that focused mainly on solving benchmark questions, Astra worked on problems that had remained unsolved for years. OpenAI has also released reasoning walkthroughs alongside the research, allowing mathematicians to review how the model arrived at its conclusions.

The announcement has sparked competition within the AI industry. Anthropic said its Claude Fable model independently solved five of the same problems, highlighting the rapid progress being made by leading AI companies in advanced reasoning and scientific research.

The development could have implications beyond mathematics. Stronger reasoning capabilities may help AI contribute to areas such as drug discovery, engineering, cybersecurity and advanced scientific research. However, experts stress that human verification remains essential before AI-generated findings are accepted by the wider scientific community.
