PayPal has laid off about 600 staff in India (~10% of its workforce) across Chennai, Bengaluru and Hyderabad amid global restructuring.

The cuts spanned teams in technology, engineering, operations, payments and finance.

Employees were pulled into a virtual call on the morning of August 31 and told right there that their jobs were gone.

Access to company systems was cut immediately after the call ended. Others found out via a direct email letting them go.

Those affected have been offered a month’s salary as severance and some job placement help, though many say they’re still waiting on details of their final settlement. The India cuts fit into a much bigger plan.

PayPal’s leadership said in May it would trim 20% of its global workforce over the next two to three years, aiming to save at least $1.5 billion a year in run-rate costs once the plan plays out fully.

Ireland went through a similar round the same day, losing about 164 jobs there, close to 12% of its local team. India isn’t a minor part of PayPal’s setup either.

Chennai, its oldest India centre dating back to 2008, is the company’s largest tech hub outside the US and runs core payment systems and cloud infrastructure.

Bengaluru handles AI and machine learning work, and Hyderabad, added in 2019, focuses on fraud prevention and risk management. PayPal is far from the only company doing this.

Oracle, Uber, Wells Fargo and Walmart have all cut India roles recently too, part of a wider pattern of global firms trimming their India teams while shifting more work toward AI.
