Peru’s Prime Minister Gustavo Adrianzen resigned Tuesday evening after a cabinet reshuffle failed to stop opposition lawmakers from pushing for his removal.
He resigned just hours after President Dina Boluarte swore in new ministers, including a new finance chief.
The entire cabinet must now step down, though Boluarte can reappoint ministers once a new prime minister is named.
A no-confidence vote against Adrianzen was already scheduled for Wednesday, and the reshuffle only increased opposition demands for his ouster.
According to a recent Ipsos poll, Boluarte’s approval rating has dropped to a record low of 2%.
The newly appointed Finance Minister, Raul Perez-Reyes, will have to resign but may be reappointed, although his predecessor, Jose Salardi, had strong backing from Peru’s top business groups.
