India’s largest gas importer, Petronet LNG, is in talks with Qatar to include liquefied natural gas (LNG) sourced from the United States under its renewed long term supply agreement.
The move is aimed at diversifying India’s energy imports and reducing dependence on supplies from the Middle East following disruptions caused by the Iran war.
According to a report published on 03 November 2026, Petronet LNG’s Group General Manager Vivek Mittal said Qatar was willing to consider India’s request to source a portion of the contracted gas from other suppliers.
Qatar currently supplies Petronet LNG with 7.5 million metric tonnes of natural gas annually. The existing agreement, which expires in April 2028, has been renewed for another 20 years until 2048.
Under the proposed arrangement, Qatar could provide some of the contracted volumes using LNG secured from its suppliers in the United States.
QatarEnergy has already signed a 20 year agreement with Woodside to purchase 3 million metric tonnes of LNG annually from its US facilities, with deliveries expected to begin in 2030. It has also signed agreements with Cheniere Energy for supplies of up to 4 million tonnes annually.
The conflict in the Middle East disrupted LNG shipments through the Strait of Hormuz and affected operations at Qatar’s Ras Laffan facilities. QatarEnergy declared force majeure on supplies in March, with the disruption currently extending through December.
As a result, India has increased efforts to secure gas from alternative suppliers, including the US, Oman, Nigeria, Angola and Australia.
The proposed arrangement could improve India’s energy security by providing access to alternative LNG sources while maintaining its long term partnership with Qatar. However, the final supply arrangement will depend on negotiations and the availability of contracted volumes.
