PhonePe has partnered with Visa to introduce a new set of cardless and borderless payment solutions for Indian consumers and merchants. 

Announced at the Global Fintech Fest 2026 in Mumbai, the partnership will allow users to make payments across online, offline and international channels without relying on physical cards.

The collaboration includes three new solutions: Tap to Pay, Cross Border Scan to Pay and Smart Accept. PhonePe said the new services are designed to make digital payments easier for consumers while giving merchants more ways to accept payments from customers in India and abroad.

One of the biggest developments is the launch of Visa’s cross-border QR payment functionality through PhonePe. PhonePe becomes the first Indian app to offer this capability, allowing Indian users to make QR-based payments while travelling internationally at participating merchants.

The partnership also expands PhonePe’s presence beyond its traditional UPI-focused payments business. Tap to Pay is aimed at contactless transactions, while Smart Accept is designed to help merchants accept digital payments across different payment channels.

For Indian consumers, the move could make international travel more convenient by reducing dependence on cash and physical payment cards. For merchants, the wider acceptance network could help them serve both domestic and international customers through a single digital payment ecosystem.

The partnership comes as Indian fintech companies are increasingly looking to take domestic digital payment technology to international markets. PhonePe has already been expanding its presence in cross-border payments and has worked with global payment networks on contactless and tokenised card transactions.

The latest agreement with Visa could therefore strengthen PhonePe’s position in the global digital payments market while giving Indian consumers more options for seamless cardless payments at home and overseas.
