On 9th September, Prime Minister Narendra Modi reviewed the destruction caused by heavy monsoon rains in Himachal Pradesh. He conducted an aerial survey of Mandi and Kullu before landing in Kangra, one of the worst-hit areas.

The state has been devastated by floods and landslides, which have taken over 370 lives. Additionally, 41 people are missing. The disasters caused losses worth Rs 4,122 crore, according to the State Emergency Operation Centre. Roads, houses, power supply, and water systems have been badly damaged. Furthermore, 619 roads, 1,748 transformers, and 461 water schemes are still defunct.

After his survey, PM Modi announced a Rs 1,500 crore relief package for the state. This includes the advance release of SDRF funds. Benefits under PM Kisan Samman Nidhi will be provided. The package includes rebuilding homes under PM Awas Yojana, repairing highways, and support for damaged schools under Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan. Moreover, livestock aid and help for farmers without power connections are included.

Damaged houses and schools will be geotagged to speed up relief and rebuilding. Other measures include water harvesting structures to recharge groundwater and improve water management. Inter-Ministerial Central Teams have also been deployed to assess losses, with the possibility of more relief to follow.

The monsoon has destroyed over 6,300 houses, 461 shops and factories, and large areas of land. Consequently, the state’s infrastructure is severely crippled.
