Kolkataβs metro network will get three new stretches next week, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi set to inaugurate them on the morning of 22nd August.
The main ceremony will take place at Jessore Road station on the Yellow Line, chosen over Sealdah and Airport stations for security and logistical reasons.
The new stretches are:
- Green Line (EastβWest Metro): 2.6 km EsplanadeβSealdah, completing the full 16.6 km Howrah MaidanβSector V corridor.
- Yellow Line: 7 km NoaparaβAirport (first operational phase).
- Orange Line (Phase II): 4.5 km RubyβMetropolitan.
Once the Green Line is fully operational, Howrah MaidanβSector V trips will take 35 minutes, with trains every 8 minutes during peak hours. The line will later shift to Automatic Train Operations (ATO) for faster travel and higher frequency.
The Green Line project faced delays due to water leakage and soil subsidence, but received safety clearance in April.
After the metro launch, PM Modi will travel to Bihar to inaugurate the 1,320 MW Buxar Thermal Power Plant the same day.
