Assam is set to witness a rare sight this weekend — fighter jets landing on a national highway as Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurates a new Emergency Landing Facility (ELF) in Dibrugarh district on Saturday, 14th February.

The Prime Minister will travel from New Delhi to the Chabua Air Force base on Saturday morning. From there, he will board another aircraft and land directly at the Moran Emergency Landing Facility, according to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

To mark the inauguration, the Indian Air Force (IAF) will stage a large-scale airshow. Rafale, Sukhoi and other fighter aircraft will participate, with several jets landing on the highway strip and others flying overhead. Around 16 IAF aircraft are expected to be part of the 30-minute aerial display. Sarma described it as the first such elaborate exercise conducted at an Emergency Landing Facility.

The newly developed strip is the first highway-based airstrip in the Northeast. It is located on a 4.2–4.4 km stretch of national highway between Dibrugarh and Moran in Upper Assam.

Designed as dual-use infrastructure, the facility will function as a regular highway for vehicles but can be converted for military aircraft operations during emergencies, natural disasters, or wartime situations.
