As global trade tensions with the US escalate, BRICS leaders are set to meet virtually on 8th September to discuss tariffs and push for a multilateral world order. The summit, hosted by Brazilβs President Lula da Silva, will see Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin come together once again. At the same time, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will skip the meeting.
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar will instead represent India at the 4:30 PM IST summit. China has said President Xi will deliver an βimportant speech,β just days after he marched alongside Putin and North Koreaβs Kim Jong Un at a military parade that drew sharp criticism from the US.
Xi and Putin had skipped the July 2025 BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro, which Modi attended. Still, all three leaders recently crossed paths at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) meeting in China.
At last weekβs SCO Trade Ministersβ meeting in Vladivostok, India stressed the need to diversify exports, strengthen supply chains, and reduce dependency. Commerce Ministry official Amitabh Kumar underlined the importance of coordinated trade action, services trade, and MSME participation in global value chains.
