India’s power consumption rose 2.2% year-over-year (YoY) to 147.48 billion units (BU) in April 2025, up from 144.28 BU last year.

The highest supply in a day (peak power demand met) increased to 235.19 GW in April 2025, compared to 224.05 GW in April 2024.

The peak power demand reached a record 250 GW in May 2024, surpassing the previous all-time high of 243.27 GW in September 2023.

According to government estimates, peak power demand will reach 277 GW in summer 2025. Experts predict power demand and consumption will rise in May due to expected hotter-than-usual temperatures.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast above-normal temperatures and more heatwaves from April to June, especially in central and eastern India.

India recorded 72 heatwave days in April 2025, with above-normal heatwave days reported in Rajasthan, Gujarat, and parts of Madhya Pradesh.
