Reliance Jio Chooses Nokia as Major Supplier of 5G Network

Reliance Jio has picked Nokia as its prime supplier, the Finnish telecom equipment maker informed on Monday, as India’s biggest mobile carrier gears up to expand next-generation wireless services across the country. Jio is committed to continuously investing in the latest network technologies to offer an enhanced experience to its customers, says Akash Ambani, chairman of Reliance Jio.

In a statement, the company said that Nokia would supply Reliance Jio, which has more than 420 million customers, with 5G radio access network (RAN) equipment in a multi-year deal. 5G data speeds in India are expected to be ten times faster than 4G, with the network seen as essential for emerging technologies like artificial intelligence and self-driving cars.

Reliance snapped up airwaves worth $11 billion in a $19 billion 5G spectrum auction in August and launched 5G services in metro cities. It is also working in a corporation with Alphabet Inc’s Google to launch a budget 5G smartphone.

As Indian telecom service providers are offering 5G services, the government is also encouraging top mobile phone manufacturers, like Apple Inc, Samsung, and others, to prioritize rolling out software upgrades to support 5G services. The Reliance-Nokia deal comes at a time when some governments, including India, have banned or discouraged Chinese products use.

According to the reports, Reliance Jio is planning to raise an additional $1.5 billion through external commercial borrowings to fund its 5G capital expenditure plans.
