Retail Inflation Falls to 3.16% in April — 5-Year Low for India

Food inflation remained in negative territory for the fourth consecutive month.

India’s retail inflation eased to 3.16% in April 2025 — the lowest since July 2019 — down from 3.34% in March.

The drop was mainly driven by food inflation, which fell to 1.78% in April from 2.69% in March — its lowest since October 2021.

Prices of vegetables, pulses, fruits, cereals, meat and fish, and personal care items saw noticeable moderation.

Rural inflation dropped to 2.92% in April from 3.25%, while rural food inflation eased to 1.85% from 2.82%. Urban inflation slipped to 3.36% from 3.43%, with urban food inflation falling sharply to 1.64% from 2.48%.

Fuel and light inflation rose to 2.92% (from 1.42%), transport and communication inflation increased to 3.73% (from 3.36%), while housing, education, and health inflation remained largely steady.
